DISCOVERIES

Because what's interstellar travel without a little exploration?

Welcome to our discoveries page! Here players can try to glean extra tidbits, information, or locations from the current chapter. Please remember that exosuits do not store any information made through discoveries save for basic map data, and all chances of success/fail are determined by RNG. Discoveries are divided into three tiers: locations, FFR (Flora, Fauna & Resources), and item properties.
Tier 1: Location Discoveries: ACCESS DENIED

These are expedition-based. This means that in order for them to happen players must OOCly arrange an IC expedition for their characters to go out & explore on their own. Once you have plotted a course with the intent to thread & play out their trips, we will provide you with all the relevant information of what they will see, find, and discover! These discoveries are much more in-depth and count as a player plot which means it is up to players oocly to organize, and must be approved by the mods first. Characters may only investigate (1) location or direction at a time and are guaranteed a success. Examples of discoveries which can be made in this category are:
    • Plot Points (story-related areas)
    • Points of Interest (ruins, cities, settlements)
    • Items of Interest (alien technology, crashed spaceships)
Since these are considered player plots you will first need to head on over and make a submission on our plot submissions post. Once approved, please use the OOC comm to gather your party members! Then when you're ready please use the Tier 1 Discovery Form and reply to this entry with the appropriate information and we'll get you started along your way! The player who first submits the player plot request will be our go-to contact for your discovery so make sure you're available!
Tier 2: FFR Discoveries: ACCESS GRANTED

Discoveries in this category are search-based and much simpler. Players only need to submit the general area in which their characters is searching & for how long in order to determine what can be found in any given (discovered) area on the map. This means you cannot search an area if characters haven't been there before. The soft rule is that they need to be able to reach it on foot with limited supplies. FFR discoveries have a 30% chance to fail and return results such as "You found rocks!". Examples of discoveries which can be made in this category are:
    • Water
    • Shelter
    • Resources
    • Flora (quantity)
    • Fauna (quantity)
    • Items of Interest
Tier 3: Item Property Discoveries: ACCESS GRANTED

These discoveries are interaction-based. Once a resource, item, or species has been added to the Flora, Fauna & Resources page, all players can choose to have their character(s) interact with it to learn more about it. These discoveries require a short write-up of how the character will be investigating the desired object or creature, and have a 15% chance to fail. Characters can only investigate (1) object or species at a time. Examples of discoveries which can be made in this category are:
    • Flora Toxicity (low, medium, high)
    • Flora Uses (food, unique properties)
    • Flora Behavior (patterns, neutral, hostile)
    • Fauna Behavior (friendly, neutral, hostile)
    • Fauna Uses (food, unique properties)
    • Language Discovery (vocabulary)
    • Lore (logs, documents, specimens)
As Discoveries are been made they will be added to the game archives and noted in the Discord server changelog. By the time characters depart a planet both the map and the Flora, Fauna & Resources pages should be sufficiently filled in with detail regardless of whether or not they uncover all it has to offer.

If you would like to make a discovery please fill out the appropriate form with "DISCOVERY TIER: #" in the subject line:

Tier 1: Location Discoveries

Tier 2: FFR Discoveries

Tier 3: Item Properties Discoveries

well that solves the power drain problem in the hull

the call was coming from inside the house

--FAUNA DISCOVERY-- (animals, aliens)
Character(s) Involved:
Elma | [personal profile] bladebabysitter
Fauna: Trilobite Queen (isn't she really a resource at this point?)
Type of Interaction: In addition to the testing discussed here, Elma will be doing general physical study of the queen's exoskeleton. Testing it for strength and durability from multiple locations on the body. Can it be sharpened? Does it burn (using sparks from salvaged bone)? Can it be drilled through, with the old-fashioned 'stick and sand grains' juryrigged drill, and does that compromise its integrity? Would it work as armor plating, if set up to be worn somehow?

--RESOURCE DISCOVERY--
Character(s) Involved:
Lance | [personal profile] ceruleo
Clark | [personal profile] anewhope
Resource: Kh'svil
Type of Interaction: thread here - Lance and Clark are gearing up to check out the kh'svil specimen in the ruined hull. Clark's gonna use his x-ray vision to determine if there's anything organic inside, or even if the material responds in any way. Does it melt under laser? Can it be dented or scratched? (Fingernail, a bit of metal, they'll try various things) Would anything happen just from touching it? Etc. They won't spare the water to do a dunk test, but they might check how heavy it is relative to the moss on the hydroponics room floor.

TIER 3

--FAUNA DISCOVERY-- (animals, aliens)
Character(s) Involved:
Max Briest | [personal profile] thephix
Fauna: Seedlings
Type of Interaction: Max wants to know how smart those little things are! Her first step is going to be an attempt to motivate them with food, either from the trilobite queen or her own rations. If that works, she'll try the whole "put the food under a thing and see if the seedling figures it out" as well as a very basic maze out of pod bits/stone from the city with a food motivator. Like Clara with the trilobites, she'll also give clicker training a try.

If it doesn't have interest in food, she'll still try the maze test but with "freedom" as the reward rather than food. Overall she'll also be trying to figure out if they'll learn that someone doesn't mean them harm, since she'll be gentle when interacting with them.
thephix: max (looking for fun)

she loves her dumb plant children

TIER 2

[personal profile] thephix 2016-11-15 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
Character(s) Involved:
Max Briest | [personal profile] thephix
Location Searched: Underground lake
Duration of Search: On and off for an entire day/night cycle, at least an hour at a time but she'd go back outside to recharge her suit occasionally
Type of Search: She's gonna shift herself some gills and bioluminescence to go diving deep into the lake, looking for anything of interest like fish/plants/artifacts/secret tunnels. (If there's anything horrible in there I'm just gonna say rn that I'm okay with her getting hecked up)
thephix: max - gratuitous black and white icon (Default)

she just wanted to get to her lover on the other side of the mountain

[personal profile] thephix 2016-11-15 06:05 am (UTC)(link)
wow those eels creep me the fuck out but max will be pleased

if she roped some kryptonians into it, could they get the big bulky thing out of the lake?
thephix: max (he's mourning me now)

TIER 2

[personal profile] justice_of_toren 2016-11-18 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
Character(s) Involved:
CHARACTER NAME | [personal profile] justice_of_toren
Location Searched: The Forgotten City
Duration of Search: She'll start out as soon as it's daylight and go as far as she can before she thinks she'll need to turn around so she can get back to camp before complete nightfall. So probably about 6 hours of moving further into the city before heading back. Her sense of time and direction are inhumanely good, so *hopefully* she won't get lost...
Type of Search: This trip is less archeology and more surveying. She'll check a few buildings as she walks for anything obvious that looks useful or at least possibly informative about the people who lived there, but she's not going to go digging, yet. If she can find rock chalk-like enough to rub a big X by the door of buildings she's looked in, that's perfect. If she gets as far as some of the musical archways, that will for sure grab her attention and she'll follow them along until she has to turn back.

Also, she will be humming and singing at various volumes the entire walk. Checking acoustics is totally helpful. (Right?) You're welcome.

[personal profile] justice_of_toren 2016-11-20 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Well, at least it was a fairly pleasant walk....or at least as nice as it gets on this planet.

Does she reach the whistling archways, or that going to take another trip? (Or maybe an IC post with some of her new comrades, because safety in numbers?)
thephix: max (and I least I understood then)

[personal profile] thephix 2016-11-21 10:03 am (UTC)(link)
i'm back with more questions, sorry!

a) is the robot rusted

b) what will clark and/or Kara see if they x-ray vision their new metal friend
ceruleo: (050)

tier 2

[personal profile] ceruleo 2016-11-21 05:57 pm (UTC)(link)
100000 years later......

Character(s) Involved:
Lance | [personal profile] ceruleo
Hunk | [personal profile] astromechanic
Pidge | [personal profile] sweatysometimes
Clark | [personal profile] anewhope
Location Searched: Forgotten City
Duration of Search: a full day; night-time has settled in by the time they get back. It's more secure as a group, so they're less worried about staying out past dark.
Type of Search: as there's four of them, they're a bit more organized (thank Clark and Pidge) and are essentially conducting a more in-depth recon sweep of the city's less worn-down neighbourhoods. Namely they'll be checking inside houses, trying to find anything salvageable, anything to give them a clue as to how the people of the city used to live. Lance found a bracelet in the hull and may take interest in anything resembling it. Pidge has her eye out for leftover tech. Hunk, nerd engineer that he is, will take a special interest in any repeating patterns, especially if they're mathematical in nature, like fractals or spirals. Of course, they're all on the lookout for more of that telltale Atlas symbol, aside from the murals.

They'll also be working off the map data from the hull, trying to mark important spots as they go in the hopes of making the city a bit less of a maze for the others.
