They'll be looking for any parts that are edible, so if there's any more fleshy bits aside from the tendrils, Jess will test it on a patch of exposed skin to see if it makes her itchy. If it doesn't and it passes the "could this be edible" test (I bet Bruce read the wikihow) she might eat the tiniest bit. I really hope she doesn't die.
They'd also be looking for how it gets water, so comparing it to Earth plants and also just going digging around the hole it came from to see if there's any clue there.
Eventually they'll use a bit of that bone shard spark to see if it's flammable. Fire is a friend.
